Georgia & the Convention
Posted August 12th, 2008 by zachary.smith
Just a few days ago Russia invaded our ally and sovereign nation of Georgia. How quickly we forget, as I find it interesting that we are shocked that Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, or really ‘Dictator in Chief’ is behaving like the former soviet KGB agent he is. In what is a clearly a neo-soviet move, Russia is attempting to rebuild its empire, literally. Georgia is a pro western democracy and a good friend to the United States, and even a possible future member of NATO (something I hope we now fast track). I don’t think anyone can miss the message Mr. Putin is trying to send us. Those of you who are students of history may find the parallels to Germany circa 1938 so similar it almost defies belief, as the Russians are literally using the same exact strategy. Putin is taking the Hitler play book and following to the letter, and make no mistake Georgia is only the first. If we don’t stand against Russia now and remind them they lost the Cold War (World War 3 really), and that we will not tolerate our allies and peace loving democracies being conquered, it will be our freedom that will be threatened next. We must act now and not appease Russia the same way Germany was, otherwise we will find ourselves in the midst of a new vastly more serious Cold War, and one in which we’ll be starting off from a position of weakness. My thoughts and prayers are with our freedom loving brothers in Georgia, and I hope you will join me in that and in strongly condemning Russia’s actions. I also hope you’ll join me in encouraging our leaders to stand with our friends and not throw them under the bus, but to stand tall and stop this neo-soviet Russia revival before it gets started.
In other news our fearless leader Alex Willette and I have the very distinct honor of going to the National Convention as alternate delegates. This I believe is a strong indication of how important the Maine College Republicans have become in state politics. I will be blogging daily from the convention which you’ll be able to read here or on my website zacharyearlsmith.com. The UMPI College Republicans will be hosting an event September 6th in which I’ll be talking about my experiences from the convention, and where CRs will be able to meet a couple of there own running as candidates for the Maine State House.
If the invasion of Georgia is still going on by the time the school year starts, I hope CR groups all over Maine will have activities of solidarity for our Georgian allies. If you’re interested in attending the post convention and meet the CR candidates event in Presque Isle please contact the UMPI CRs. I believe that this current international crisis only strengthens the reality that our candidate for President, John McCain, is the only one qualified and I look forward to hearing him accept the nomination in person in Minneapolis.
